Content

Part 1: Evolution, relationship (bumble bees, stingless bees), taxonomy, wild bees (species, habitats, protection), species of honey bees, races of Apis mellifera, morphometry.
Part 2: Selected chapters of biology: Super-organism bee colony, orientation, communication, bee dance, division of labour, comb building, temperature control.
Part 3: Pollination: Overview pollination, economically meaning of pollination (examples), problems beekeeping - agriculture (plant protection,GMO).
Part 4: Bee products: Honey, tasting several austrian honeys, propolis; royal jelly, special products,excursion.
Part 5: Selected chapters of bee genetics: Genetic composition of a bee colony, sex determination, mating biology and consequences for practial beebreeding.
Part 6: Organisation of Austrian beekeeping, problems, topics wished by students.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Introduction to the diversity of bees; teaching of the most interesting biological and genetic aspects of bees; get to know beekeeping as an environmentally sound agricultural sector; information about the organisational structure of apiculture; highlight connections and problems between agriculture, forestry and apiculture; bees and environmental protection.
