Content

Garden monument preservation in theory, planning, practice and management:
- Monument concept in the 20th and 21st centuries;
- Scientific and legal basis as well as planning basics (park maintenance works, expert opinions on monument protection; monument conservation, nature and landscape protection, UNESCO world cultural heritage);
- Garden monument preservation in Austria compared to Germany and Switzerland;
- Reconstruction - revitalization - reinterpretation; preservation, maintenance and development of historic gardens;
- Post-war landscape architecture (as a basis for seminar work).

Previous knowledge expected

Knowledge of European and international garden history and landscape architecture history

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Students will be able to
- classify historical open spaces in the discourse of monument preservation,
- explain the legal and social framework of garden monument preservation in Austria and localize the scope for action,
- distinguish and apply garden monument preservation strategies,
- identify current problems in the care and management of historic open spaces,
- recognize and evaluate open spaces of the 1950s and 1960s (seminar work).
