Content

•1st half: Introduction to Optical Methods in Cell Biology
•2nd half: Work with various optical methods: The practical part is held on two consecutive days (date to be arranged on the first day of lecture) and will give hands-on experience in the following systems.
•Inverted research microscope (Zeiss Axio Observer) equipped with:
*epifluorescence
*bright field
*polarization microscopy
*phase contrast
*differential interference contrast
•Upright confocal microscope (Leica SP2 or SP5)
•Total internal reflection fluorescence microscope (Leica TIRF-M)
•Stimulated emission depletion (STED) super-resolution microscope (Leica SP8)

Each participant will make their own images on the different systems and will be required to write a concluding summary report on the lecture and course including individually prepared figures as basis of the evaluation. The use of ImageJ image handling and processing freeware is recommended for this report.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

•The student has acquired an understanding of the basic concepts behind the most important optical methods in cell biology.
•The student has practically used a significant selection of optical cell biological tools presently in use at the VIBT.
•The student has shown the capability to process, mount and describe microscopic figures as required for thesis/journal publication.
