Theoretical background and summaries of relevant methodologies for designing and carrying out studies on human perceptions, values, and behaviors as they relate to wildlife management. Will include descriptions of data-collection methods (e.g., focus groups, surveys, interviews) along with descriptions of modeling and analytic procedures to inform sampling designs and analyze the information.
Descriptions of structured approaches to wildlife management that take into account human perceptions, values, and behaviors.
Illustrated examples from temperate ecosystems, including coastal, freshwater wetlands, agro-ecosystems, and mountain forests.

Students understand the principles of human dimensions of wildlife research and management (HDW), including theories linking human perceptions and values to behavior, methods for conducting empirical studies of human perception and behavior, and approaches that integrate people (including their perceptions, values, and behaviors) to inform and support cyclical wildlife management processes.
Students will also learn about examples where these methods and approaches have been applied in temperate ecosystems, and they will be able to conduct a basic HDW study.
