Content

In this lecture, the foundations of maintenance and monitoring of protective structures will be presented.

The lecture content is divided into the following areas:

Structural maintenance in structural engineering and protective structures
1.) Inspection techniques
2.) Assessment methods
3.) Current laws and regulations
4.) Evaluation of the structural condition
5.) Defects and damage mechanisms (prediction models)

Monitoring concepts
1.) Where to apply monitoring
2.) Development of monitoring tasks
3.) Preliminary considerations regarding monitoring tasks
4.) Sensor systems
5.) Data management and analysis
6.) Evaluation of measuring results

Testing methods
1.) Non-destructive testing procedures
2.) Geodetic monitoring methods
3.) Planning and interpretation of in-situ testing
4.) Surface hardness methods
5.) Ultrasonic pulse velocity methods
6.) Partially destructive strength tests
7.) Cores
8.) Load testing and monitoring
9.) Durability tests
10.) Chemical testing and applied techniques

Previous knowledge expected

The course builds on the scientific foundations imparted by the Bachelor’s program, and in particular on basic knowledge of:
(a) Mechanics
(b) Protective structures (functional types, structural types)
(c) Materials (concrete, reinforced concrete, wood, masonry)

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Students acquire the skills for developing, analyzing and assessing concepts for structural maintenance. They learn about the key elements for the structural assessment of protective structures. They also acquire basic knowledge of monitoring and assessment methods which enable them to perform efficient evaluations, structural assessments and interpretations of engineering structures.
