Content

This lecture is concerned with what drives and curbs globalisation, with what may be seen as progressive or as an aberration. Or both. To pin this down, globalisation is interpreted as the globally continued project of modernisation, launched during the European Age of Enlightenment. As such it will be discussion as a utopian concept, with its repeated failures and the immanent danger of turning dystopian altogether.
The educational and research programme BOKU builds is built on the pillars of natural sciences, technology and social sciences. At the same time, most participants of this lecture actually keep their focus on – more or less – applied natural sciences. In this situation, this lecture approaches the case of globalisation in asking very principally what social sciences can actually contribute to their work. It will make explicit what i) economics, ii) sociology, and iii) political sciences actually have to offer. To get this done, we will begin with fundamental epistemological questions, leading us to understand possible differences in the philosophy of science of natural and social sciences. In the following every participant is invited to select a concrete example by her/himself to exemplify social scientific approaches to it. In support of this, input on each of the three social scientific disciplines will be given during the semester.

.

Previous knowledge expected

The lecture will start from scratch. Still, some background in social sciences would be of some advantage.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Participants will be able to follow and contribute to the discourse on Modernisation and Globalisation. They will get some deeper insight into what they can actually expect from social sciences
You can find more details like the schedule or information about exams on the course-page in BOKUonline.
