This course deals with floods, low flows, droughts and water quality. The challenges related to water management will be showcased and discussed. The topics will be presented via relevant case studies. Other relevant impacts encountered in practice will be introduced and discussed.
Typical challenges regarding water management will be highlighted and the methods required to solve them will be presented. This includes rainfall-runoff modelling, the acquiring of geodata, the optimisation of model and decision support systems as well as necessary statistical functions, also multi-criteria methods and cost-benefit analysis.
The contents of the lectures are expanded and intensified in the independent exercise course (816353).

After successful participation in the course you will be able to:
+ explain the international and Austrian legal framework on floods and water quality.
+ present and explain the effects of low flows and the associated challenges for water quality management.
+ present the stages of implementation of the Floods Directive and explain necessary measures and associated tools (methods and data) for the implementation of effective flood management.
+ describe operationally relevant hydrological modelling systems and differentiate necessary data requirements (boundary and initial conditions, parameters).
+ explain the calibration and validation of rainfall-runoff models for runoff forecasting and water quality predictions and describe necessary optimisation procedures.
