Content

The objective of the lecture is the technical and creative planning and design of an engineering structure. The aim is to learn to understand and apply design concepts for supporting structures, including the use of planar components made of structural concrete, steel, wood and glass. The current lecture continues with the structural engineering subject matter of the lecture “Construction of beam structures” and expands it to include planar supporting elements (plates and shells). Students will learn to apply the normative foundations (EUROCODE) on real spatial structures and to comprehend and manage a project in its entirety. Also, students will learn to work in a planning team. The course consists of a traditional lecture supplemented by a tutorial. In the lecture, the theoretical foundations (material models and calculation models) will be explained. In the exercise units of the tutorial, the required certification procedures and design methods will be presented and demonstrated using carefully selected examples. An essential part of the course is a project work where students will complete a structural engineering project in its entirety.
Content of the lecture:

- Plates
1.) Linearly supported plates (single-axle and two-axle plates)
2.) Ribbed ceilings
3.) Point supported plates (flat ceilings)
4.) Glass plates

- Shells
1.) Definition
2.) Framework models
3.) Global framework models
4.) Superposition of timber framing models
5.) Local timber framing models

- Fitness for use
1.) Concrete and reinforced concrete construction
2.) Steel construction
3.) Timber construction

Project:
- Implementation of a project on the basis of a posed task formulation (which changes every year)

- Capturing the static system
- Modelling process using RFEM 3D
- Calculation of the internal forces under realistic loading conditions
- Design and dimensioning of selected components
- Preparation of suitable construction plans (in the format required by the applicable standards)
- Presentation of the finished project

Previous knowledge expected

contents of lecture classes 875.110, 875.111, 875.101, 875.102 and 875.103
Idealized design of a system
Determination of internal forces in statically determinate systems
Understanding the behavior of statically indeterminate systems

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

The aim of the course is to understand and apply the design and dimensioning concepts for linear as well as planar structural components made from reinforced concrete, steel or timber. Examples for such components are: elastic beams , tension rods, pressure rods (including props and frames with stability failure), foundations, plates and shells. A further aim is to independently develop a simplified project and to gain experience with work in a planning team.
