Organic agriculture in eastern Austria (Lower Austria) is restrained by lacking animal husbandry and rain shortages in early spring and summer. Processes in this dry area are based on a balanced crop management, due to crop rotation and soil preparation, to prevent harvest losses by nutrient depletions, droughts, plant pathogens and weed pressure. Furthermore an increasing humus content to stabilize soil aggregates for plant nutrition and sufficient soil water content is obligatory. Therefore, biodiversity by seeding cover crops and again crop rotation are required.
During the winter semester we will look into basic procedures in organic farming, like soil preparation methods, how to save water, effects on water infiltrations, plant, development of grain crops, cover crops and weeds and soil fauna. Furthermore, we will visit an organic farmer in eastern Austria.

Basics in plant productions conventional or organic farming, soil management, plant nutrition and the ability for a critical discussion with present research (peer reviewed research papers).
