Content

The spatial relevance of tourist development, its chances and risks as well as possibilities and instruments of planning to influence this development are shown using examples from various topics:
- the tourism system in the context of the basic spatial functions (living, working, recreation,…): interactive creation of a mind map; introduction of various possibilities to explain the tourism system
- experience economy, adventure parcs: interactive work on the ecological, social and economic impacts of adventure parcs for the respective region
- describing the economic and societal importance of tourism by using tourist characteristic figures; calculating these figures together
- tourism as impetus to increase regional value added: tourism and agriculture, experience pedagogy to sage regional assets (guest lecture by an expert in the field), regional marketing and events, work task to identify tourist target groups, importance of regional cooperations such as theme trails or taste regions for tourism
- alpine tourism: ecological, social and economic impacts of tourism in the Alps; critical discussion of the spiral of growth in alpine tourism; impacts of climate change, sustainable spatial planning in alpine regions
- tourism mobility and climate change (guest lecture of an expert from the Ministry of Transport, Innovation and Technology)
- sustainable development and tourism: introduction and classification of the concepts ecotourism, soft tourism, tourism and sustainable development (basic concept, discussion of case study projects), critique of growth, concept of the Learning Region, quality labels in tourism
- second homes and non-hotel accommodation: critical discussion of space usage as well as economic and social impacts of these hybrid forms of tourism
- tourism and natural hazards: classification, natural hazards plan, land use plan
- overall concepts for tourism: asset mapping, public participation processes to establish an overall concept in tourism

Previous knowledge expected

overview over spatial planning matters in Austria, basic knowledge in regional planning and sustainable rural development

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Increased spatial planning skills concerning tourism planning; independant evaluation of ecological, social and economic risks and chances of tourist phenomena, realising one's own possibilities as a planner to influence tourist development; realising tourism as a system and analysing its most important stakeholders;
