principles and foundations of Central European (Austrian) forestry as well as comparison with boreal and mediterranean conditions; sustainability in forestry in historical context and contemporary developments (i.e., sustainable forest management; SFM); demands and interests of different stakeholders; concept of multifunctional forest management, its potentials and limitations; overview on current conditions of Austrian forests; principles of production ecology in Central European context; silvicultural systems and concepts and their practical implementation;
contemporary developments in forestry (e.g., climate change, biomass for bioenergy; Natura 2000)
The course is structured into indoor lectures and 2 field trips (several groups) including discussion of practical hands on examples in forestry.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

The lecture is dealing with aspects of Central European (Austrian) forestry, its ecological conditions and socio-economic and legal framework of sustainable forest management. The students are aquainted with basic knowledge on silvicultural concepts and systems, demands and requirements of various stakeholders as well as potential and limitation of multi-functional forest management in balancing multiple interests. Students learn to know and understand important planning approaches in forestry as well as interactions with other sectors and downstream of forestry-wood chains.
