Content

In the post-genomic era, the modern researcher in the life sciences is confronted with enormous amounts of biological data. Whether this consists of sequence data, 3D structural data on biomacromolecules, or micro-array analyses, the broad subject of bioinformatics generally tries to organize the data and to extract information and knowledge from the raw data. This course serves as an introduction to bioinformatics and covers all key areas of bioinformatics, including biological databases, sequence alignments, searches and analyses, phylogenetics, structural bioinformatics and biomolecular simulation, biological statistics as well as systems biology.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Students should become acquainted with modern computational tools in the areas of bioinformatics, structural biology, simulation and systems biology. At the end of the course, students are expected to understand the theoretical basis of various methods.
