Content

Basics of energy and electricity industry. Objectives of energy policy in European and Austrian. Position of hydropower in the context of national and international electricity and energy policy, particularly in the context of a liberalized electricity market.
Issues associated with the operation of hydropower plants. Key characteristics of different types of hydropower plants and their contribution to security of supply.
Environmental issues of hydropower in terms of national and European climate policy as well as on water policy - in particular will be discussed the impact of the EU -Water Framework Directive on the development and operation of hydropower plants.
Electricity pricing in a liberalized electricity market. How is the price for electricity influenced? Support systems and market mechanisms in the context of European climate policy.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Explanation of the basic concepts and mechanisms of European and national energy and electricity industry. Overview of the hydropower system in Austria. Disussion of specific water management issues in connection with the operation of hydropower facilities, and environmental issues. Economic frameworks on hydropower in a liberalised (deregulated)electricity market. How does the electricity market work and what is the basis for our electricity prices?
