In order to perform successful work in modern life sciences, knowledge is required about how to work with biological databases and bioinformatics online tools. In practical examples students will learn how to use public sequence databases as well as software for sequence analysis and interpretation. Students will get introduced to challenges of working with DNA and protein sequences. Apart from using online tools (e.g. blast, genome browsers) the students will gain first experiences in working from the Linux command line.

Previous knowledge expected

It is recommended to take this course in parallel to „Introduction to Bioinformatics“, or thereafter.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Knowledge of the most important bioinformatics websites, databases, and tools. Experience in how to work with databases and software commonly used for the analysis of DNA and protein sequences. First experience with working on the Linux command line.
