Content

General course subjects: Introduction to mountain forests and typical problems in mountain forest management and science; practical information about the Mountain Forestry curriculum at BOKU; intercultural exchange of knowledge and views between Mountain Forestry students and lecturers.

Course subjects:

Field Camp I will include discussions, introductory lectures, and field trips, as follows:
*) Self-introduction of the participating students;
*) Presentations by the students and group discussions;
*) Exchange of information between MF student groups ‘20210-2023’ and ‘2022-2024’” as well as ERASMUS and other international students at BOKU
*) Introductory lectures on forests, forestry and forest ecology in Austria and on mountain forests and mountain forestry in general;
*) Walk through the BOKU Demonstration Forest with explanations on forests and forestry in Austria and demonstration of forest experimental plots;
*) Three full-day excursions (Rax mountains, Forest administration Nasswald, National Park “Danube Flood Plain”);
*) One half-day excursion (Forchtenstein).

The program will be complemented with social events and especially the barbeque with international students participating in Field Camp I and Field Camp III. In the evening we will cook and have dinner together.
Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Field Camp I has five major objectives:

(1) Welcome the first-year Mountain Forestry (MF) students and other international students and provide a forum to enable them to get to know each other as well as to get in contact with a few lecturers involved in the Mountain Forestry curriculum;
(2) Introduce the students to the Mountain Forestry study program;
(3) Bring the MF student groups ‘2021-2023’ and ‘2022-2024’ as well as ERASMUS and other exchange students at BOKU together for exchange of information and views;
(4) Introduce the students to the ecology and management of mountain forests including socio-economic and political aspects, special emphasis will be given on the situation in Austria and the Alps;
(5) Introduce the students to a few lecturers, their associated institutes and research interests, as well as to their involvement in the Mountain Forestry curriculum.
