Environmentally friendly freight transport – a vision oft he future or our mission? Intermodal freight transport by train, inland ship and truck.
Modern goods traffic allows for a variety of potential alternatives in transportation of goods by road and rail, by water and by air. Innovative solutions to intermodal supply chains often fail because of lacking transparency and prevalent complexity. Parties involved do consider seriously alternatives in transportation due to company routines and poor communication of specific advantages of alternative transportation modes. In practice, performance indicators are defined from the point of view of specific means of transportation, resulting in a vast number of taxonomies for all entities involved. The transportation sector suffers from the diversity of conventions which leads to virtually no comparability of the performance of different means of transportation. The unequal proportion of transportation modes in overall transportation, constant growth of traffic volume and lacking transparency tackle politics and logistics and represent future challenges.
Intermodal and cobined transport including environmentally friendly transport modes like rail and inland vessel are one way of reducing transport related green hous gas emissions.

Intermodal transport: The movement of goods in one and the same loading unit or road vehicle, which uses successively two or more modes of transport without handling the goods themselves in changing modes.

Combined transport: Intermodal transport where the major part of the European journey is by rail, inland waterways or sea and any initial and/or final legs carried out by road are as short as possible.

.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

• holistic reflection and analysis of the system transport - why do we transport goods and who is to blame?
• How can the future of the world look like in the context of transportation? Providing different views and insights into the world of freight transport.
• Pointing out the specific characteristics and individual strengths of the transport modes (rail, road, inland ships), loading units, infrastructure and thus identify and encourage the possible combinations of sustainable transport chains.
• Providing a olistic representation of the "intermodal and combined transport system“ for the creation of awareness of environmentally friendly transport of goods.
• Explaining the existing, partly hidden and unused potentials of alternative transport modes
• Enabling the comparability of all transport modes involved in the transport of freight.
