Content

This elective course shows the application of thermodynamics to biological systems, especially those relevant in bioprocess engineering. The course covers a refresher of thermodynamic principles, e.g. energy, entropy, enthalpy, laws of thermodynamics, parameter estimation. Application of thermodynamics will be demonstrated with several examples. Description of biomacromolecule behavior during precipitation and adsorption will be covered, as well as thermodynamics of enzymatic reactions. Applications to more complicated biological systems will cover metabolic pathways, e.g. glycolysis and whole cell thermodynamics using the eQuilibrator platform.
The course will consist of lectures and practical exercises.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Enable the prospective student to analyse, design and code relevant biotechnological systems at different levels of complexity.
