The course focuses on the following animal species/groups (thereby prioritizing huntable species): ungulates, predators, hares, grouse, ducks and other game bird species. Depending on the wildlife species/group, systematics, biology, habitat requirements, population dynamics and relationships between wildlife and humans, land use practices, hunting, tourism are addressed as well as social behaviour, feeding ecology, predator-prey-relations.
Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

The student gains basic knowledge of wildlife ecology of a selction species (mammals and birds) in Austria. Depending on the wildlife species, the student is able to assign wildlife species to zoological systematics and to depict a species´ habitat, reproductive system, social behaviour, feeding ecology and partially also population dynamics. Given the relevance for a wildlife species, the student can outline particular aspects of wildlife management, e.g., re-introduction and land-use conflicts. Based on this knowledge, the student has the competence to evaluate habitats in terms of their suitability for certain wildlife species (presence-absence) or to recognize feeding supply for given wildlife species. The student can contrast different reproductive strategies in wildlife species and interpret different population dynamics. Consequently, the student can derive management options and demands and argue them.
