Content

Current developments in livestock farming;
Basic principles of thermoregulation, gaseous emissions and effects on farm animals, bioaerosoles, farm animal behaviour, human-animal-relationship;
Legal framework (e. g. animal welfare legislation);
Description of housing systems for the most important livestock species with regard to the fulfillment of behavioural needs, as well as ecological, hygienic and economic aspects.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

This course focusses on the role of livestock farming in agro-ecosystems and mainly aims at providing knowledge on the biological basis of livestock husbandry including behaviour and animal welfare. The role of considering species specific behavioural needs for the development of welfare friendly housing and management systems will be addressed with regard to the most important livestock species.
