Content

Theoretical background of the physiology and ecology of (harmful) insects and their natural enemies (growth and nutrition, digestion, immune defense, etc.) and important methodological approaches are presented. Selected research questions are discussed on the basis of simple experiments on host-parasitoid interactions in teamwork, data are evaluated using basic statistical methods and summarized in a written report. The test results are presented and analyzed in a joint final meeting.

Previous knowledge expected

The course is primarily intended for students of the master's degree in phytomedicine (compulsory subject) or forestry (optional subject). In the event of overbooking, higher semesters are preferred for available places.

Students of other master's programs are also welcome, subject to free places!

We expect knowledge in light microscopy and in dealing with Excel, creating graphics and tables, simple statistical calculations with Excel (alternatively SPSS or R), mathematics knowledge from the advanced level: linear or logarithmic equations

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After successfully completing the course, the students have an insight into scientific work.
They are able to
- develop scientific hypotheses and
- carry out simple biochemical-analytical methods in the field of nutrient determination.
they
- master important techniques in the field of light microscopy,
- are able to statistically evaluate the data obtained and display it graphically or textually.
They can
- interpret test results,
- present results in front of an informed auditorium,
- defend the methods used in a scientific discussion,
- write a report according to scientific criteria.
You can find more details like the schedule or information about exams on the course-page in BOKUonline.
