In this course, we seek to explore the nature and dynamics of human conflict, and to look at appropriate alternatives for dealing with conflict in ways which develop healthy relationships and prevent violence. Conflicts and possibilities for their resolution are analyzed from a social scientific perspective.
General topics:
• Overview of the development of public participation
• Theories of social conflicts
• Societal perceptions of conflicts ("Conflicts as a destructive force" versus "Conflicts as an impetus for change")
• Tools of conflict analysis
• Approaches of conflict resolution ("decide-announce-defend approach" versus "participatory approach");
• Chances and limits of participation; prerequisites for successful participation
• New models of participatory planning and conflict resolution (e.g., moderation, mediation, scenario workshops, consensus conferences ...)
• Group work: design of a participation process
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

• Identify and characterize social conflicts arising from the use and/or protection of natural resources
• Develop strategies to resolve multipolar social conflicts
• Understand one´s own role in the democratic process and localize possible levers for change
