Biomass is the basis of human nutrition and for some years now has also been under discussion (again) as a climate-neutral substitute for fossil materials and energy sources. About 75% of the global land area is used for the production of biomass and almost 40% of the world population still lives from agriculture. Biomass is a key societal resource and the question of how to feed a growing world population, increasingly using biomass as a raw material and energy source, and at the same time protecting the last remaining wilderness areas from cultivation, is of crucial importance for global sustainable development. Against this background, selected topics will be prepared, presented and discussed in the seminar in group work. Topics to be discussed include global food patterns, population development and food situation, bioenergy and biomaterials, green revolution, animal husbandry, soil fertility and limits of yield increase, new land grabbing.
