The Quaternary has been characterised by the changes of paleoclimatic conditions during the last 2.5 million years. Major parts of todays landscape were formed during the Quaternary. The lecture provides an overview of the relevant processes and encompasses topics from climatology, global circulation systems of atmosphere and ocean, as well as landscape development, sediments and rocks of the Quaternary, to the effects of changes in geological systems in a paleoclimatic context, as well as their relevance for the current discussion on climate change.

- Knowledge of stratigraphic principles and the stratigraphy of the Quaternary
- Understanding the global circulation systems (atmosphere, ocean, water)
- Understanding landscape forming processes of the Quaternary (glacial, periglacial, fluvial, lacustrine, aeolean, mass movements)
- Knowledge of Quaternary landforms, their sediments and rocks
- Analysis of effects of changes in geological systems (with respect to e.g: paleoclimate, climate change, global change)
