Content

A. The physical environmental conditions – preconditions for crop growth: solar radiation, water, atmospheric conditions (carbon dioxide, wind, temperature) are discussed per se (definition, units, relations) and in their role for microclimatic and crop growth conditions, including their interactions and processes within the soil-crop-atmosphere system. Presentation of the specific heat and mass flow processes of canopies (i.e. radiation, heat and water balance, evapotranspiration). Determining factors of climate and local and microclimates, climate variability and consequences for agricultural and food production. Climate classifications and mapping and applications for agrometeorology.
B. Causes and analysis of adverse weather and climatic conditions for agricultural animal and crop production and their global relevance (in various cropping and climatic regions). Available measures for crop protection against adverse weather and climatic conditions. Specific outline on drought/crop water stress, crop water balance; too high and too low temperatures (incl. heat and frost damage), wind and water erosion, (soil and leaf) wetness and others.
Specific outline on measures against adverse weather conditions for crops and animals: irrigation, protection methods against evapotranspiration, frost protection methods, wind protection methods, mulching methods, foil, glasshouses etc.
Sub-chapters on:
-Agrometeorological aspects of agroforestry systems
- Consequences of climate change for agriculture considering agrometeorological aspects; discussion of simulation and study results for crop production
-Remote sensing applications and methods in agrometeorology
C. Examples of operational agrometeorology (examples from different agricultural systems and countries, agrometeorological warning and forecasting, specific applications and new developments)

Previous knowledge expected

Basic knowledge on meteorology, plant production, soil sciences and plant physiology.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

-Understanding complex physical-biotic relationships and interactions in the system soil-crop-atmosphere.
-Knowledge on determining physical parameters for crop growth conditions and understanding of energy- and water balance, heat and mass flows within crop stands as basis for analysing agrometeorological phenomena and problems.
-To get an overview on operational and practical agrometeorological methods and tools in different cropping systems and climatic zones of the globe.
