Content

Decision support systems are computer based systems for integrating data base management systems with analytical and operational research models, graphic display, tabular reporting capabilities and the expert knowledge of decision makers to support the identification, structuring and solving of specific decision problems. The course will focus on
- justification for decision support
- definition of information needs and requirements for decision support
- types and levels of decision support systems their characteristics and capabilities
- DSS taxonomies (GDSS, SDSS, MCDSS, AIDSS ...) and frameworks
- model management for decision support including ontology design, fuzzy systems
- DSS development tools and development approaches (analysis, design methods, documentation tools)
- case studies of DSS development in forestry
- expert systems applications in forest management

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

The purpose of this course is
- to be acquainted with the conceptual foundations of decision support by introducing theoretical concepts
- to know about the different context of DSS use, readily available software and development tools
- to be able to recall the specific problems of developing DSS dealing with a hypothetical decision problem
- to be able to judge the purpose, relevance and applicability of existing DSS tools for a decision problem
