This short course discusses bio-inspired design with an emphasis on geotechnical engineering applications. Select topics will include an overview of principles of bio-inspired design and biomimicry, as well as a few case studies in the emerging field of bio-inspired geotechnics. The course will include lectures, discussions, and conceptual design projects.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
After taking this course, the students can
1. develop an understanding of the principles, philosophies, processes, methodologies, and tools available for bio-inspired design
2. relate geotechnical theories/processes to biological mechanisms/behaviors, and vice versa
3. complete a conceptual bio-inspired design to address a chosen geotechnical challenge
