Content

Summary on biotechnological processes and their added value as well as perspectives

Genetic methods for strain improvement: selection, mutation, recombination; general implementable principles demonstrated in examples

Development of biotechnological relevant microorganisms and mammalian cells as production clones

Primary metabolites – strains for production and development

Microorganisms for production of enzymes; biotransformation

Protein expression in eucaryotic cells

Host cell lines for recombinant protein expression; expression vectors, selection mechanisms

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After having passed this course the students will be able
- to classify different organisms according to their benefits in biotechnology
- to express the complex demands of the production chain
- to explain production demands of primary metabolites and recombinant proteins
- to discuss pros and cons of different production systems
- to gather interrelations of biological, physiological and technical basics for the implementation in biotechnological processes
