The lecture gives insight into different methods for materials and structural characterization.
Starting from wave-optics principles and basics in measurement instrumentation (including “noise”) different measurements methods will be introduced. For each of these methods will be introduced by examples from the scientific literature, after which the physics behind, the measurement principles and the characteristic experimental setup will be explained. The specific scientific question addressed and the basic route of data evaluation will be addressed.
The measurement methods will be e.g. X-ray spectroscopy, light- and X-ray scattering, mass spectrometry, rheology, mechanical tests. Other spectroscopic techniques or electron microscopy will be touched slightly.

- After following the course you will be able to explain the basic principles of wave optics and measurement instrumentation.
- After following the course you will be able to list the measurement methods and explain the according principles.
- After following the course you will be able to draw a scetch of the differnent main components of a specific setup and to explain how the measurement is performed.
- After following the course you will be able to select a suitable measurement method for a given scientific question.
- After following the course you will be able to tell from a diagram what method it belongs to, and to interpret the displayed data.
