Content

Topics of this course are genetics and the influence of hormones on plant growth and development, as well as adaptation to a changing environment (genotype and phenotype). Additionally, basic techniques in plant genetics and molecular biology are explained. Interlocking theoretical lectures with concrete experiments done in small groups facilitate a critical examination of the question: ‚How does the interaction between genes and environment influence growth and development in plants.‘ Understanding these basic principles is the foundation for a critical debate about related topics that are important for our society, such as the limits of the green revolution, new methods in plant breeding, or resilience and biodiversity. Thus, we will also reflect on the limitation of resources and sustainability.

Previous knowledge expected

basic knowledge of genetics, genome structure and molecular biology, lab experience (MOBI)

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After this course, the students are able to evaluate the effects of genetic changes on plant development, and scrutinize emerging methods in this field. The students know basic techniques for working with model- and transgenic plants, and can apply them. They can determine genotype and phenotype of plants, understand basic plant anatomy and genetics, as well as their applications. The students also gain first experience in setting up experiments and train to collect and present their own data.
