The seminar gives students the opportunity to delve deeper into a topic area of land use research and to practice the techniques of scientific work with the aim of learning empirical methods of land use research. Participants calculate (independently with support) a selected indicator set of land use (e.g. HANPP, ecosystem carbon stock) in small groups and present and discuss the results in the seminar. The work on empirical data includes data collection, preparation and aggregation for the respective calculations and finally the evaluation, analysis and presentation of the results. In order to interpret the results, the economic and political development of the countries under consideration is also researched and connections between socio-economic developments and land use changes are discussed.

After successful completion of this course, students are qualified to do so:
-Planning and implementation of a micro research project
-basics of HANPP and carbon calculation and their application in social-ecological research
-Use of statistical and spatial explicit data
-preparation, analysis and presentation of research results
