Theory:
- Phytoplankton/Phytobenthos taxonomy for lentic and lotic ecosystems
- Basic information about WFD assessment and other common assessment methods
- Physiology and ecology of algae
Practical experience:
- Identification of main algal groups in aquatic ecosystems using existing taxonomic literature
- Experiments about algal ecophysiology
- Previous knowledge expected
-
basics in limnology (e.g. courses in Limnology or limnochemistry or equivalent background), registration for the Applied Limnology Master program is of advantage.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
After successful completion of this module, participants are able to:
•Identify key-species of main algal groups (e.g. green algae, diatoms, cyanobacteria);
•Evaluate selected environmental effects on algae;
•Apply knowledge and skills to run short term experiments on ecophysiology of algae ;
•Evaluate the effects of human impacts on algae - such as eutrophication, river engineering measures such as regulation and reservoirs etc.;
•Evaluate the current assessment approaches using algae in lentic and lotic ecosystems
