- The role of fungal diseases and insect pests in afforestations at high altitudes as well as the risk of introduction of new diseases and insect pests into mountain forests
- Differential diagnosis of plant symptoms and field disease signatures including abiotic damages (frost, radiation, mechanic injuries, snow), damage by cattle and game as well as impact by competitive vegetation
- Macroscopic and microscopic examination of frequent and/or important high altitude forest tree diseases and insect pests
- Identification of the potential natural timberline and aspects of regional planning
- Identification of growth promoting, reducing and limiting criteria & indicators by micro-site conditions
- Species/provenance selection & seedling production
- Planting techniques, protection and tending
- Milestones of monitoring and evaluation

Previous knowledge expected

Students without a Bachelor in Forestry are excepted to have passed the course 913322 "Waldbau und Forstschutz für Naturgefahrenmanager"!

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Based on their acquired knowledge of important/frequent damaging factors in afforestations at high altitudes and strategies of prevention, the students are able to assess the feasibility of afforestations near the timberline, taking into account ecological, economic and technical aspects. Students will also be able to plan, guide and evaluate afforestations projects after the successful completion of the course.
