Content

Part II of this lecture addresses the same topics as Part I, but is based on further examples. Aspects important for the understanding that were covered in Part I are repeated in Part II, therefore Part II is can be attended independently from Part I.
Material failure represents a significant risk factor for nuclear power plants and related nuclear facilities. Selected examples of material relevant safety problems of various plant types are treated, nuclear as well as renewable energy plants, especially wind energy. The severe accidents of Harrisburg (TMI), Chernobyl and Fukushima are included.
Students (of all faculties & departments) are familiarized with nature, usability and application limits of various categories of materials including such for special applications (selection, manufacture, testing, etc.) in an easily understandable way.
Based on the societal significance of the risks of energy supply in general and nuclear in particular as part of the so-called critical infrastructure, attention is focused on inter-and transdisciplinary contexts.
Excursions to (mostly foreign) nuclear and non-nuclear power plants will convey a realistic impression of dimensions and complexity of such installations.

Previous knowledge expected

High school degree knowledge

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

The overall target is to understand the global importance of material-related risk issues for society and the importance of interdisciplinary and transdisciplinary approaches.
Acquisition of selected basic knowledge of material technology, obtaining an overview of functioning of important non-renewable and renewable energy supply systems under the aspect of material-related limits.
