Basics of human catabolic and anabolic metabolism. Regulation and coordination of metabolic pathways. Introduction of representatives of the six enzyme classes. Role of vitamins as precursors of cofactors in enzymes. Based on that knowledge, mechanisms of microbial and plant metabolism are discussed.
The lecture includes the following topics: Biochemical reaction mechanisms, biothermodynamics, glycolysis, substrate level phosphorylation, fate of pyruvate (homolactic fermentation, alcoholic fermentation), tricarboxylic acid cycle, glyoxylate cycle, gluconeogenesis, oxidative pentosephosphate cycle, respiratory electron transport, oxidative phosphorylation, glycogen metabolism, fatty acid oxidation, regulation and coordination of carbohydrate metabolisms (allosteric enzymes, substrate cycles, hormones, signal transduction), amino acid degradation and urea cycle


Previous knowledge expected

"Organic chemistry" and "Basics in biochemistry": Knowledge of chemistry and structure of biomolecules (proteins, carbohydrates, lipids, purins and pyrimidines)

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Understanding of basics of biological energy conservation and of (bio)chemical principles of catabolic and anabolic metabolism. Knowledge of correlation between thermodynamics and regulation as well as of the role of primary (hormones) and secondary messengers in regulation and coordination of biochemical pathways. The student should understand the link between vitamins and enzymatic cofactors, and should be familiar with the nomenclature of enzymes from all six classes. After successful completion students must know about the correlation between way of living and metabolism of microbioal organisms.
