Content

Lecture: Aspects and examples of sustainability in the plant kingdom

Seminar topics: Introduction to DNA; Enzymes; Isolation of nucleic acids; Electrophoresis; Molecular markers; Sequencing; Population analysis; Phylogenetic analysis.

Practice: The practical part is concerned with methods of assessing biodiversity, with a special focus on genetic diversity. In the laboratory course the necessary molecular biology methods, which are necessary for measuring genetic diversity, are introduced and accomplished. These are specifically:

1. Purification of nucleic acids (DNA)
2. PCR-techniques
3. Separation of DNA fragments
4. Analyses of the molecular markers obtained, interpretation

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After having successfully passed this course, the students have theoretical and practical knowledge of all levels of biodiversity in the plant kingdom. They have a basic knowledge of the methods used in biodiversity research, such as surveying and sampling of plant populations, describing genetic diversity and documenting it at different levels. Concrete examples allow the students to get acquainted with methods for assessing genetic diversity in the molecular laboratory and evaluate its importance.
Based on the aspects and examples of sustainability in the plant kingdom presented in the course, the students are able to understand diversity of habitats as well as phenotypic and genetic diversity in the context of evolution. Students are also able to at least basically judge this diversity and to correspondingly act with responsibility.
