The contents of the course can be classified into three categories:
1. Basic concepts of statistical methods in hydrology (fitting of distributions to empirical data, statistics of extreme values, comparison of samples)
2. Simple deterministic hydrological models (Unit hydrograph, retention)
3. Water management (utility of flood protection measures, cost-benefit analysis)
- Previous knowledge expected
-
Basic knowledge of hydrometry and hydrology
Elementary statistics
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
After successfull completion of the course, the student is able to select and apply the basic methods for
- fitting statistical distributions to observed hydrological data,
- estimating flood discharge for a given return period,
- computing elementary precipitation-runoff models (UH),
- solving the problem of retention in a reservoir,
- cost-benefit analysis of water resources projects.
