Content

In the seminar current publications in the field of farm business management and agricutural economics are analysed and critically discussed.

Possible topics (and methods) include for example economic analyses of agricultural production (e.g. risk and efficiency analyses), spatially explicit analyses of land use (e.g. integrated land use models), valuation of non-market outputs related to agriculture (e.g. choice experiments, multi criteria analyses) policy impact analyses (e.g. matching and regression analyses).

The students, working in small groups, compare and evaluate two publications of a given topic, regarding data, methods and results. They summarize their findings in a two paged short-paper and present their results in an oral presentation. Besides their own topic, each group also prepares for another topic of a different group. After the presentation the group discusses their topic with their corresponding discussion group, followed by a general discussion.

As a results, students get to know different methods in the field of farm business management and agricultural economics and will more intensively learn about 1-2 specific research methods. This can provide helpful insights, e.g. for the selection of a topic and/or method for their master thesis. Additionally students train their presentation and discussion skills and train as well as critically reflect the use of new tools such as generative artificial inteligence (AI), when engaging in a new scientific topic and writing a scientific text.
