This course will be given by Hermann Heipieper (UFZ Leipzig).
The lectures and seminar will provide with a general overview of the mechanisms of microorganisms to adapt to all kind of stressful environmental conditions and niches, respectively. This includes adaptation to different temperatures, osmotic stress and the great filed of toxic organic pollutants and solvents.
This knowledge is important for bioremediation of contaminated soils as well as for preservation strategies in food science. In biotechnology, these microbial strategies are used e.g. in enzyme catalysis as well as in whole cell two-phase fermentation strategies for the synthesis of fine chemicals from toxic substrates.
- Previous knowledge expected
-
Preferably a bachelor degree in Food Science and Biotechnology, Agricultural Sciences or Environment and Bio-Resources Management
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
Students will gain knowledge on taking measures that either make use of adaptive mechanisms (biotechnological applications) or prevent microorganisms from adaptation and growth (food technologies).
