Content

The main emphasis of the lecture will be on the following topics:
-Overview on structural biomaterials
-Overview on natural fibre materials and innovative cellulosic materials
-Structure-function relationships in natural fibre materials with special emphasis on mechanical performance
-Production technologies of natural fibre materials
-Biopolymers and their specific properties compared to fossil-based polymers

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

The lecture aims at providing the students with a fundamental and broad knowledge about natural fibre materials, associated production technologies, and resulting material properties.
After this course, students know about the disadvantages and advantages of natural fibres compared to technical fibres, dispose of an overview of available natural fibres and their properties, understand effects of structural variability on the properties of natural fibres, and dispose of an overview of suitable processing technologies.
