In Biorefineries I, raw materials for biorefinery approaches are introduced with respect to their availability and composition. The lecture will focus on plant materials and highlights the similarities and differences with respect to their main constituents. The different materials can be further processed by a variety of conversion methods that will be presented in the lecture.
Biorefnieries I sets the basis for the Biorefineries II that will continue with characterisation and utilization in a biorefnery framework.
- Previous knowledge expected
-
Participants have completed their Master thesis and are currently enrolled in a PhD program at BOKU University with a focus on conversion, characterization and utilization of renewable materials. The lecture is held in English.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)
-
After completion of Biorefineries I, the students can list all relevant steps from the different raw material sources and their composition to their mechanical, chemical and enzymatic conversion in different streams.
They can compare the raw materials with respect to their availability and composition and are able to discuss the applicability of the above mentioned conversion technologies.
They develop scenarios with respect to the future application potential and analyse their viability. Also, they are able to illustrate scenarios with examples. Based on the knowledge obtained in Biorefineries I, the students generate their own view on advanced biorefineries with respect to chemistry and materials.
