The 18th event of the "Überlebensmittelsphilosopie" series takes place in the 9th district: Institute for Science and Art, Berggasse 17/1
(from Türkenschanze with bus 40A approx. 15min)

Theme WS 2019-2020 "About the Light"

The world of light ...is comprehensive, direct, indirect, used as a metaphor - this diversity of light shall guide our reflections in this philosophicum. We speak of light in the dark (also an auxiliary action); the light positive, the dark rather negative. If we want to sleep, blue light is highly disturbing, it indirectly activates the hormone melatonin, which prevents us from sleeping. Without light no photosynthesis, without this no life; dark bucket and light bucket. Light pollution (in the cities) and light damage (of the skin). Light therapy where it is predominantly dark; where darkness prevails, depressions occur in the long run; also vitamin D deficiency; light (bright) thoughts; "I am the light of the world, who follows me, he will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life" (Joh.8.12). Light figures (Franz...) and dark figures; the light as medium in art in the paintings of Van Gogh (1853-1890) or Jan Vermeer (1632-1675); light organs; the Loh of Lights; light and shadow; postmodernism ... Light Art; Clearings (nakedness) in forests to feed the animals, also rather something we seek to escape the darkness of the forest; light on the horizon; Liberty enlightening the World - that means the Statue of Liberty...In medicine the narrowing of the clearing of the mitral valve between the left atrium and the left chamber is a theme. Enlightenment in the biblical sense: "I am the light of the world, he who follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life" (Joh.8.12). In our increasingly complicated world, religions seem to offer hope for help. Plato's (428-348 B.C.) cave parable wants to teach us how the world can be seen - to reach the (day) light. And then linguistic affinities like (spiritual) lightning; clairvoyance; clearing as therapy concept; and end the seminar with "light" at the end of the tunnel... or even enlightenment.

In order to gain a well-founded understanding of the topic, participation in both days is a prerequisite.
For the recognition of the LVA a seminar paper is to be provided to the extent of approx. 3000 words. The topic can be chosen individually in the context of the course. For the seminar work it is also necessary to register for the examination. The deadline (= examination deadline) is 30.04.2020.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

While society proclaims on the one hand side sustainability but on the other hand side a short term economic approach is dominating individual and societal practises, there is evidence that at an University a lecture is offered on philosophical reflexions combined with scientific approaches and societal-political developments.

The lecture “Überlebensmittelsphilosophie” offers the students an insight into philosophical, societal, science theoretical, ethical and religious topics and discourses. The presentations follow yearly specific thematic priorities. The students are able to relate their own practises in context to the lecture presentations. They are motivated for critical reflexions on science.
