Biological roots of morality. The era of enlightenment and its consequences. Systems analysis of the environmental crisis and its roots in the history of ideas. Cartesian dualism. The traditional anthropocentric limitation of ethics and the necessity of new concepts. Albert Schweitzer and his ethics of "reverence to life". The principle of responsibility (Hans Jonas). Science, technology and responsibility. The necessity of control of technology by society. Environmental protection and politics, environmental protection and legislation. Sustainable development as an (anthropocentric) ethical concept. The necessity of an holistic ethical concept. The social dimensions of environmental ethics: Organizing responsibility. Environmental ethics requires knowledge in human ecology. Therefore ethical principles are discussed in connection with relevant examples.
