The course presents basics of natural resource management in developing countries, both from the perspective of the biophysical conditions in tropical and subtropical countries as well as from a socio-economic perspective. It covers the following topics: climatological characteristics of the tropics and subtropics, soil science and soil conservation, fundamentals and limitations of carrying capacity concepts, environmental issues, plantation and close to nature forestry, crop production, livestock management, agroforestry, crop protection and protection of stored products, forest protection, aquacultures, fundamental socioeconomics, structure of ownerships. Instruments and key characteristics of Austrian development cooperation are presented and participative approaches are introduced.
- Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Participants know and understand different land-use systems in developing countries and are aware of current challenges of sustainable land use including socio-economic aspects of land use. They got insight into ecological characteristics, preconditions and problems of land-use in the tropics and subtropics. They know instruments and key characteristics of Austrian development cooperation. Furthermore, participants are motivated to deepen their knowledge in land use issues in developing countries by participating in respective specific courses at BOKU or other Universities.
