Content

Pinpointing the position of open space planning within the complex urban system. Questions such as "What is the scope of urban planning?", "What are the functions of open spaces?" and "How can open space planning blend into urban development?" are highlighted and discussed.
Functions and landscape architectural approaches to urban systems are identified; Basics on functions, procedures and measures of open space planning in urban design are imparted.
The course comprises discussions with representatives from public administrations, to provide insights in the day to day challenges of urban planning. An half day excursion introduces urban design examples in Vienna's Seesadt Aspern. Course contents are solidified by schematic examples of development in homework.

Previous knowledge expected

Scope and methods in landscape architecture, the lecture is designed for students in the master curriculum. sufficient skills in German for participating in discussions and for oral presentations

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

Basic knowledge of functions, procedures and measures of open space planning in urban design, furthering the perception of urban development processes, the identification of urban system contexts and the understanding of urban special dimensions as a basis for interdisciplinary discourse and holistic and sustainable solution strategies.
