What is hunting and hunting management? Purpose of hunting; historical overview; hunting systems, hunting models, hunting policies and hunting management (in particular in forest holdings); all hunting methods either commonly used in Austria at the moment or alternative ones; their consequences and efficiency, options of optimizing them; trapping as a special topic, falconry, hunting weapons and sights used for rifles etc. (components, functions, handling, dimensions), ammunition (types, measurements, cases, fusing/priming, bullets, danger zones), ballistics (internal, muzzle ballistics, external and target ballistics); behaviour before and after the shot; care and use of the hunted game, trophies and effects of trophy-hunting, dogs used for hunting (way of working, breeds, use); ferrets and hawking birds (falcons), husbandry and use; hunting tradition; (mis)use of the hunting horn; First Aid for hunters, facilities in a forest district (incl. winter enclosures), care and cultivation of habitats.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

The students should become acquainted with the different methods of hunting (practice, impact on wildlife animals, efficiency of game management), they learn to understand functions, handling and consequences of different hunting equipments (weapons, ammunition, sights, traps, facilities for hunting in a forestry district) and they get to know the way of working of dog breeds commonly ued for hunting. Future forest-managers will be equipped with the management qualifications necessary for questions of hunting policies, decision making and management problems (different hunting systems, different management models, winter enclosures etc. with special regard to the so-called Forest-Game-Problem) as well as for dealing with various ways of cultivating habitats in the agricultural and silvicultural landscapes. This course also covers the essential knowledge required for the "hunting-qualification" (alternative for part of the hunting-permit exam) in the field of hunting-management.
