Previous knowledge expected

Mathematics, Physics and Chemistry on baccalaureate level

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After successfully completing the module students will be able to name the most important technical materials and their response to mechanical and environmental influences. Furthermore, students will be able to explain how the physical proper-ties of materials are determined by their micro- and nanostructure and select ap-propriate materials according to the performance index.

After successfully completing the module the students will have profound knowledge of the structure and chemical bonding of materials, as well as conse-quences for thermal and electric properties, and scattering techniques for micro-structure characterisation. They will be able to apply the concept of material se-lection, by using the performance index and Ashby diagrams.
