Content

This course will cover the principles of bio-inspired design with a focus on geotechnical engineering and infrastructure. The topics include an introduction to relevant biological concepts, bio-inspired design theory, translation of biological strategies to solve engineering problems, methods to address spatial and temporal scale differences, and development of a bio-inspired solution in geotechnics. This one week-course will culminate in a design project that the students will develop and present in class.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

• Become familiar with biological concepts relevant to bio-inspired design
• Develop expertise on the bio-inspired design process applied to geotechnical engineering
• Identify and evaluate the scale effects relevant to upscaling bio-inspired principles to infrastructure applications
• Apply bio-inspired design to develop a solution in geotechnical engineering
