This course introduces into methods for the analysis of historical and contemporary social-ecological transformation processes, with a focus on qualitative data collection (e.g., semi-structured interviews, expert interviews, focus groups, archival work) and data analysis (e.g., policy analysis, discourse analysis, historical source analysis, legal analysis). These methods should help the students to develop their own research projects to analyze potentials and barriers for social-ecological transformation processes.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After completion of the course, the students have gained an overview on the societal challenges of the climate crisis and the reduction of resource use and greenhouse gas emissions – and how to analyze these.

Student have basic knowledge and an overview of methods to analyze historical and contemporary social-ecological transformations, with a focus on qualitative methods (e.g., policy analysis, discourse analysis, qualitative interviews, historical source analysis, legal analysis) to understand potentials and barriers for these transformation processes.

After the successful completion of the course, students will be able to understand the potential of different qualitative methods for the analysis of transformation processes.

Students have basic knowledge on how to conduct qualitative social research on social-ecological transformations.
