Content

In this course students acquire hand-on experience in modern analytical techniques. In collaboration with researchers from the group of Instrumental Analytical Chemistry and Metabolomics, student will perform analysis of metabolites, elements and/or isotopes. The topics and samples reflect ongoing research projects of the group in the fields of bio(techno)logy, environmental and/or food sciences.

Students can choose between the following analytical techniques:
•Liquid chromatography mass spectrometry (LCMS)
•Microfluids
•Inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry (ICP-MS)

The lab exercises will take place at the Institute of Analytical Chemistry, Muthgasse 18, 3rd floor.

This practical course is a follow up of the course 771317. We recommend taking both courses in the same semester. This allows getting a deeper understanding of analytical workflows and getting to know how a modern analytical research laboratory works.

Previous knowledge expected

Knowledge of current analytical methods: 771108 Analytische Chemie VO.
Practical experience in analytical chemistry: 771106 Instrumentelle Analytische und Physikalische Chemie UE.

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After completing the course, students will be able to plan and perform analysis using organic or inorganic mass spectrometric techniques, respectively. They will have basic data evaluation and interpretation skills. Students will be able to summarize their findings in the form of a mini-paper.
