•Nutrient cycling in riverine landscapes including global perspectives
•Effects of land use on matter cycling and effects on water quality
•Possible measures to reduce matter input and measures to improve internal processing – treatment wetlands
•Water quality status of Rivers – assessment methods
•Perspectives for water quality improvement and the value of river restoration and conservation measures

2. Presentation of recent literature by the students related to the topic

3. Interactive final seminar on state of the art knowledge on aquatic ecosystem functions and ecosystem services in relation to water quality aspects, as well as worldwide examples to improve water quality.

Previous knowledge expected

Lecture in limnochemistry or equivalent course in water quality
Basic knowledge in river engineering or river restoration is of advantage

Objective (expected results of study and acquired competences)

After successful completion of this module, participants are able to:
•Discuss the impact of human activities on elemental cycles and water quality in aquatic ecosystems;
•Integrate different water quality aspects in the current understanding of aquatic ecosystem functioning
•Apply the current scientific knowledge in the selected topic and discuss it in the light of the potential for ecosystem management;
You can find more details like the schedule or information about exams on the course-page in BOKUonline.
